Recognizing a high-quality humidor

In short

A high-quality humidor shows on the inside: fully lined with Spanish cedar, a lid that closes tightly and solidly, clean workmanship and a humidifier that works evenly. The exterior mainly decides looks and price. Good desktop humidors with a full set of accessories start at about €50 to €80.

1. The interior lining

The most important part is the wood you don't see. Spanish cedar (Cedro) absorbs moisture and releases it again, buffering swings in the room climate. It keeps tobacco pests away and gives cigars a spicy aroma over time. High-quality humidors are fully lined: floor, walls and the inside of the lid.

2. The lid

A humidor is only as good as its lid fit. Lay a sheet of paper over the rim, close the lid and pull: you should feel resistance. A well-made lid closes with a full, muffled sound, not a bright rattle.

3. Workmanship

Clean, even edges, no glue residue inside, hinges that guide the lid without play. With handcrafted humidors, look at the details: how does the lid sit, how even is the surface?

4. The humidifier

Polymer crystals absorb distilled water and release it slowly and evenly. They're easy to care for and found in most good humidors. Simple sponges are cheaper but tend to grow germs if not kept clean.

5. The hygrometer

A hygrometer belongs to a complete humidor. It shows whether humidity is in the range of about 65 to 70 percent, where cigars keep their aroma.

6. Accessories

A complete set saves follow-up orders: cigar cutter, humidifier, hygrometer, a divider to separate compartments and a cloth for the surface. Stainless steel is worth it for the cutter, because coated blades go dull quickly and fray the wrapper.

7. The right size

A well-filled humidor keeps its climate more stable than a half-empty one. So high quality doesn't mean big, it means matched: for 20 to 30 cigars a desktop humidor is right. More in A humidor for 20 to 30 cigars.

8. Warranty and packaging

A clearly stated warranty and packaging that gets the humidor to you undamaged are part of a good product. If it's a gift, look for a gift box too.

What a high-quality humidor costs

Solid desktop humidors with a full Spanish cedar lining, hygrometer and humidifier start at about €50 to €80. Above that you mainly pay for the exterior material, size, brand name or electronic control. For storage quality, lining and lid decide, not price.
