Prepare for the German fishing exam — with the official questions of your state, a simulation scored by your state's rules and a fish guide that helps you identify every species with confidence. The app is in German, just like the exam.
On this page
Angelschein & Fischlexikon brings together the official exam questions from eight German states, an exam simulation scored by your state's rules and a guide to 68 species — all in one app for iPhone and iPad.
The app contains the officially published question catalogs of Bavaria, Brandenburg, Hesse, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, North Rhine-Westphalia, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Schleswig-Holstein: more than 5,600 questions in all, with questions and answers word for word. You choose your state during setup; the app keeps your progress, mistakes and results separate for each state.
The only change is the order of the answers. In the Brandenburg catalog, for example, the correct answer always comes first. The app shuffles the answers on every run, so you learn the content rather than the position.
Where a state publishes no answer key — Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, North Rhine-Westphalia and Schleswig-Holstein's state-specific questions — the answers were carefully worked out by the developer and checked twice. The app marks every one of these questions as unofficial.

The home screen shows how much has already stuck and what's due today: mistake cards to review and the number of new questions you should cover each day before your exam date.
Below that are the rules of your exam, your latest simulations and the way into subject areas, the mistake log, search and history.

Three answers, one of them correct, and the clock is running. Flag the questions you're unsure about and jump back to them from the overview later.
The simulation draws its questions at random, following your state's distribution.

Once you hand in, you see your result against the overall pass mark and against the pass mark for each subject area, scored the way your state scores it.
Then you go through your mistakes one by one or look at every question of the run again.

Each profile tells you how to recognize the species, where it lives, what it feeds on, when it spawns and how big it gets.
At the bottom are the species it's easily confused with — along with the feature that tells them apart.

For North Rhine-Westphalia: the ten tasks of the practical part, from the light ringed rod to the surf rod.
You put the fishing tackle together, and the app scores it using the official sheet and shows your points.

There is no single nationwide fishing exam in Germany. Each state tests with its own catalog, its own time limit and its own pass marks — and that's exactly how the simulation works: as many questions per subject area, as much time and as strict as in your state, including the minimum number of correct answers per subject area where there is one.
| State | Simulation | Passed with | Questions in the app |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bavaria | 60 questions, 60 min | 45 correct, at most 6 mistakes per subject area | 998 |
| Brandenburg | 60 questions, 120 min | 45 correct, at least 6 per subject area | 597 |
| Hesse | 60 questions, 120 min | 45 correct, at least 9 per subject area | 563 |
| Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania | 60 questions, 90 min | 45 correct, at least 6 per subject area | 1,146 |
| North Rhine-Westphalia | 60 questions, 60 min | 45 correct, at least 6 per subject area | 353 |
| Saxony | 60 questions, 90 min | 45 correct, at least 8 per subject area | 885 |
| Saxony-Anhalt | 60 questions, 120 min | 45 correct | 619 |
| Schleswig-Holstein | 60 questions, 90 min | 45 correct, at least 7 per section | 484 |
So a run with enough points overall that falls below the pass mark in one subject area counts as failed — just like in the exam. Saxony-Anhalt has no pass mark per subject area; there, the written part is followed by an oral one. In North Rhine-Westphalia, picture plates and rod assembly are added.
Schleswig-Holstein does not publish how the exam questions are spread across the sections of its new catalog. The app draws 12 questions from each of the five text sections there and requires 7 correct per section — roughly as strict as 6 out of 10 per subject area in the exam.
Besides the simulation, you practice each subject area on its own, with instant feedback after every answer. A question only counts as learned once you've answered it correctly three times: right away, the next day and three days later.
Profiles of freshwater and saltwater fish, lampreys and crayfish: how to recognize them, where they live, when they spawn and which species they're easily confused with.
There's also a picture quiz whose wrong answers favor exactly those look-alikes — chub, dace and ide, for example. The pictures are historical color plates and photos, each one credited.
In North Rhine-Westphalia, the exam has two more parts besides the 60 questions: out of six randomly presented picture plates, you have to name at least four species correctly, and you assemble a piece of fishing tackle chosen by the exam board from tasks A 1 to A 10 the proper way — passed from 25 out of 28 points.
The app trains both: fish identification for the 49 species on the official list and rod assembly for all ten tasks, scored with the official score sheet of 16 items.
The tasks and the score sheet are official. There is no official model solution — the solutions in the app were worked out by the developer. According to the NRW fishing association, this part of the exam is expected to be replaced by a mandatory practical day before the exam from 2028; until then it stays as it is.
Lower Saxony, Baden-Württemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland, Hamburg, Bremen, Berlin and Thuringia do not publish their exam questions freely: there, associations or publishers issue them, or no catalog has been published.
You can still choose your state and practice with another state's catalog. The app says clearly on the home screen and on the purchase screen that the real questions of your state are not included — the full version unlocks the questions of the state whose catalog you practice with.
The download is free. Free to use are every tenth question of each subject area — in study mode and search as well —, one complete exam simulation, eight species in the fish guide and rod assembly task A 1.
The full version unlocks everything: all questions, unlimited simulations, the complete fish guide and the rod assembly trainer.

Picture questions are not included for any state, because the rights to the images in the official catalogs are not free. That's what the fish guide and the picture quiz are for.
Closed seasons and minimum sizes are set by each state and often by each body of water. That's why they are deliberately left out of the app.
This app is a private study aid. It is not an official service, is not affiliated with any authority and does not replace any required preparation course. Passing the exam is not guaranteed.
Questions and answers come word for word from the officially published question catalogs of the states. The publisher and date of each catalog, along with the credits for every picture in the fish guide, are listed in the app under Settings → Legal → Sources and on the sources page (in German). The official version in force always takes precedence; no guarantee is given for completeness or accuracy.

A question only counts as learned once you've answered it correctly three times: right away, the next day and three days later. Questions you get wrong go into the mistake log. If you enter your exam date, the app plans how much you should cover each day.
